Night navigation: how lights, markers and instruments guide mariners after dark

Night navigation follows the same rules as daytime boating, but the margin for error shrinks considerably once the sun goes down. 

This is why we’re proposing this guide, which walks through the COLREGs framework that governs low-visibility navigation, decodes the lights and markers you'll encounter after dark, and looks at how modern instruments help you combine what you see through the windshield with what you see on your screen - without ever replacing the human lookout.

The paradox of night boating

There's something genuinely peaceful about being on the water after dark. The traffic thins out, the wakes disappear, and the horizon dissolves into a wall of stars. It's one of the reasons so many sailors and powerboaters end up loving night passages once they get comfortable with them.

But that same darkness that makes night boating so calming also makes it deceptive. Distances are harder to judge. A masthead light that looks a mile off can be closing fast. Depth perception all but disappears, and the glow of a coastal town can make it nearly impossible to separate a genuine hazard from background clutter. Fatigue creeps in faster, and the brain, deprived of its usual visual cues, starts filling gaps with assumptions - which is exactly when mistakes happen.

None of this means night navigation needs a separate rulebook. It's the same COLREGs framework recreational and professional mariners already rely on during the day, just applied under harder conditions, with less room for hesitation and a much smaller window to correct a wrong read. 

The good news is that the system was actually built with this exact problem in mind - lights, shapes, sound signals and buoyage all exist specifically so that a vessel's story can be read at a glance, even in total darkness. Once you know how to read it, night navigation stops being intimidating and starts being just another skill in the toolbox.

COLREGs recap: the rules that govern the night

If you're following our Blog, you'll already be familiar with the backbone of maritime law: the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) and the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS), the two frameworks that between them tell you how to behave around other vessels and how to prepare your own boat and crew for whatever the sea throws at you.

A handful of COLREGs rules matter just as much at night as during the day, and it's worth having them fresh in mind before we go further.

  • Rule 5 requires a proper lookout by sight and hearing, using every means available - a rule that becomes far more demanding once your eyes are the least reliable sense on board. 
  • Rule 6 asks for a safe speed relative to conditions, and at night that calculation has to factor in reduced visibility, glare, and background lighting from shore. 
  • Rule 7 is about spotting risk of collision early, typically by watching whether another vessel's bearing is changing. 
  • Rule 15 governs crossing situations, and Rule 18 sets out the pecking order between vessel types. 

None of these rules change once the sun sets - but the consequences of misjudging them do.

Part C: giving every vessel a visual signature

Where night navigation really earns its own chapter is in COLREGs Rules 20 through 31, known collectively as Part C - Lights and Shapes. These rules specify exactly which lights a vessel must display, in what colors, over what arcs of visibility, depending on its size, type, and what it's doing at that moment.

The logic behind Part C is elegant once you see it: instead of leaving mariners to guess at another vessel's identity and intentions in the dark, the rules give every vessel a kind of visual signature. 

A specific combination of red, green, and white lights - plus, in some cases, shapes displayed by day - tells you at a glance whether you're looking at a power-driven vessel or a sailing vessel, whether it's underway or at anchor, which way its bow is pointing, and in some cases whether it's fishing, towing, or restricted in its ability to maneuver. 

It's the same principle behind road signage: a standardized visual language that removes ambiguity precisely in the situations where ambiguity is most dangerous.

This is also where Rule 6's "safe speed" takes on extra weight. The rule explicitly asks you to account for background lighting and the glare of your own lights when deciding how fast to go - because a light pattern that would be obvious against a dark, open horizon can get lost entirely against a busy, lit-up shoreline. Recognizing this is often what separates a nervous night passage from a confident one.

Lights and markers

Navigation lights explained

Every vessel underway after sunset (and during any period of restricted visibility) is required to show a specific set of lights, and learning to read them is the single most useful night-navigation skill you can develop.

A power-driven vessel underway typically shows three lights: a masthead light forward, sidelights (red to port, green to starboard, each visible across an arc of 112,5 degrees from dead ahead to just abaft the beam), and a white stern light covering the remaining 135 degrees astern. 

Put those pieces together and the boat effectively projects a 360-degree signal around itself: if you can see red or green, you're looking at one side of the vessel; if you see white only, you're looking at either its stern or a smaller vessel at anchor. 

Sailing vessels under sail alone show the same sidelights and stern light but no masthead light - which is precisely why a sailboat motoring with sails up is legally treated as a power-driven vessel and shows the extra light to match. 

Small vessels under 12 meters have some flexibility here, sometimes combining sidelights into a single fixture or substituting an all-round white light, and very small sailing craft under 7 meters may only carry a handheld torch or lantern to show in time to avoid a collision.

Beyond the basic set, plenty of special-purpose configurations exist, and it's worth being able to recognize the most common ones on sight, namely:

  • a vessel at anchor shows a single all-round white light; 
  • a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver (dredging, laying cable, towing, or fishing with gear deployed) adds extra lights - commonly red-white-red arranged vertically - to signal that she can't get out of the way as freely as an ordinary vessel;
  • a vessel engaged in night diving shows a similar vertical red-white-red sequence, a signal that should prompt any nearby boat to keep well clear and watch for divers in the water.

Fishing vessels deserve a specific mention because their lights carry operational meaning, not just identification. A vessel actively trawling shows green over white; a vessel fishing by other methods, such as nets or lines, shows red over white. 

In both cases, the message is the same: this vessel has limited maneuverability and may have gear extended well beyond what you can see, so give it a wide berth rather than assuming you know where the equipment ends.

Identifying vessels at night

Once you know the building blocks, reading an approaching vessel's aspect becomes a fairly quick mental exercise, and it's one worth rehearsing until it's automatic.

If you see red and green sidelights at the same time, you're looking at a vessel more or less head-on, and the COLREGs answer is for both vessels to alter course to starboard and pass port to port. 

If you see only a red light, the vessel is crossing from your side toward its port, which under Rule 15 makes you the give-way vessel - you need to act. 

If you see only green, the situation is reversed: you're the stand-on vessel and should hold your course and speed, while staying ready to act if the other vessel doesn't. 

If all you can see is a single white light with no color at all, you're most likely looking at a vessel's stern - meaning you're overtaking it, or it's anchored ahead of you - and in the overtaking case you remain the give-way vessel regardless of how the relative positions shift. 

As a rule of thumb, the more lights you see and the higher up they are, the larger the vessel: a ship over 50 metres typically carries two masthead lights instead of one, a signal worth learning to spot from a distance.

The genuinely tricky part isn't the rulebook, it's the background. Shoreside lighting, other boats' wakes catching ambient light, and the glare of your own instruments can all make it hard to separate a genuine navigation light from irrelevant clutter. 

Reduced-glare habits help enormously here: dim your own displays, give your eyes the 20 to 30 minutes they need to properly adapt to the dark, and treat anything unclear as worth a second, closer look rather than a quick dismissal. 

And don't assume every light is working as it should - vessel lights fail, get obscured by superstructure or cargo, or simply aren't visible from your angle, so if something isn't adding up, it's worth confirming by radio or radar rather than by assumption alone.

Navigation markers and buoys after dark

Daytime buoy-spotting relies heavily on shape and color - the cylindrical green can, the conical red nun, the black-and-yellow cardinal mark. At night, almost none of that is visible, and the entire system shifts onto light color and rhythm instead.

Lateral marks, which indicate the port and starboard sides of a channel, keep their basic logic: red to one side, green to the other, following the "red right returning" convention in IALA Region B (the Americas, Japan, and a handful of other regions) and its mirror image in Region A (Europe, Africa, and most of Asia) - a distinction worth double-checking before crossing between ocean basins, since getting it backwards in an unfamiliar port is a genuinely easy and genuinely serious mistake. 

Cardinal marks, used to indicate the safe side of a hazard relative to a compass direction, rely on distinct white-light flash patterns rather than color: broadly speaking, an east mark flashes in groups of three, a south mark in groups of six plus one longer flash, a west mark in groups of nine, and a north mark with a continuous quick flash - the extra long flash on south and the continuous pattern on north exist specifically so you don't lose count partway through and confuse the two. 

Isolated danger marks, which sit on or near a specific hazard with clear water all around, flash white in groups of two, while safe water marks - used to mark mid-channels or the seaward approach to a port - typically show a long white flash roughly every ten seconds. 

Special marks, flagging things like traffic separation zones or aquaculture areas, use a yellow light with its own distinct rhythm.

The practical takeaway is simple: before entering an area with lit aids to navigation, take a moment with the chart to note what flash sequence you should expect at each one. Mistaking a two-second flash for a four-second one, or losing count of a cardinal mark's pattern, is a surprisingly common way for otherwise careful mariners to end up somewhere they didn't intend to be.

Sound signals as a night-navigation backup

Lights and shapes cover most situations, but sound exists precisely for the moments when visual identification isn't enough - restricted visibility, close-quarters maneuvering, or simply confirming that another vessel has understood your intentions. 

In restricted visibility, a power-driven vessel making way sounds one prolonged blast every two minutes; a vessel stopped and making no way sounds two prolonged blasts; and a sailing vessel or one with limited maneuverability sounds one prolonged followed by two short blasts, also on a two-minute cycle. 

When vessels are in sight of one another and maneuvering, one short blast signals a turn to starboard, two short blasts a turn to port, and three short blasts astern propulsion - while five or more short, rapid blasts is the universal signal for doubt or danger, worth sounding the moment another vessel's intentions stop making sense. None of this replaces lights or markers, but in fog, heavy rain, or a genuinely confusing night, it's often the tool that closes the gap.

On-board instruments: bridging eyes and screen

Night navigation has always been a blended discipline, and it still is - the difference today is how much of that second half of the equation now happens on a screen rather than on paper. 

The core principle hasn't changed, though: instruments exist to support the lookout required under Rule 5, not to substitute for it. Autopilot steers; it doesn't watch. A chartplotter shows position; it doesn't spot a half-submerged log or a poorly lit fishing boat. 

The mariners who get into trouble at night are rarely the ones without electronics - they're the ones who stop looking out the window because the screen seems to have it covered.

With that framing in place, a handful of instruments do most of the heavy lifting on a modern night passage. 

GPS and chartplotters give you a continuous, reliable fix and let you cross-check your position against known depths and features on the chart - a habit worth keeping even with excellent electronics, since it catches errors before they become dangerous. 

Radar remains one of the most valuable tools for night work specifically because it doesn't care about darkness: correctly tuned, it can pick out targets, coastlines, and even approaching weather systems well before the eye could see them, though it takes practice in daylight to learn its quirks before you ever need to trust it in the dark. 

AIS (Automatic Identification System) adds a different kind of clarity, surfacing a nearby vessel's name, course, speed, and closest point of approach - turning Rule 7's abstract obligation to assess collision risk into something you can read directly off a display. 

And night-vision or thermal-imaging equipment, increasingly common on both recreational and professional vessels, can pick out obstacles, other boats, or even people in the water by heat signature alone, in conditions where the naked eye sees nothing at all - though like radar, it has real limitations in rain and needs to be understood before it's relied upon.

It's also worth remembering that a chart only tells you what should be there. Buoys drift off station, lights fail, and temporary hazards appear that no printed or downloaded chart could have anticipated. 

Cross-referencing your chart against current navigational information and notices to mariners before and during a night passage is a habit that costs almost nothing and occasionally saves the trip.

A practical night-navigation mindset for safety at night

None of the rules or instruments covered here are complicated on their own. What makes night navigation feel demanding is putting them all together, quickly, in conditions that reward preparation far more than they reward improvisation. A few habits go a long way toward making that easier.

Before you leave the dock, confirm your own navigation lights are working and correctly positioned - it's your legal responsibility as skipper, not the manufacturer's. Plan your route with markers, hazards, and expected light sequences already noted on the chart, rather than trying to work them out on the fly. 

Once underway, keep cross-checking what your instruments show against what your eyes and ears are telling you, and treat any mismatch between the two as a reason to slow down rather than push on. 

And when in doubt about another vessel's type, course, or intentions, the safest assumption is almost always the more cautious one: assume the meeting is head-on, assume risk of collision exists, and reduce speed until the picture becomes clear.

Night passages reward the mariners who respect them. With the rules internalized, the lights and markers recognizable at a glance, and the right instruments backing up - never replacing - a good lookout, there's no reason night navigation can't be one of the most satisfying parts of being on the water.
